Will Economy-Sized Car Models Attract American Consumers?

It is widely known that foreign automotive companies strive to make a high-quality motor and they consider this the heart of the vehicle. Thus, it goes through rigorous testing. Having been a test driver for some larger companies, I can tell you that this is very true. American companies are just now shuffling to meet the higher demand for smaller engine vehicles. Granted this all started back in the early 80’s. This whole trend of fuel saving. However, it has become an epidemic for many. Having doubled and even tripled their fuel costs for their daily lives depending on which day of the week it is and how much per gallon of gas it is today.

Compact cars are now popular in the USFurther, let’s keep in mind with emissions being so closely watched and further regulations coming down, we also have to look at alternatively powered vehicles. Including solar and battery and hybrid models. With sales going up in these new hybrid vehicles, it means fewer sales on traditional vehicles, thus it’s not a question of, “If” the trend will steer us towards economy sized vehicles ultimately have at least has America aware of options. Those are the combination of fuel and battery power or alternate power to fuel so that during your drive, it charges the secondary power source. With hundreds of millions of dollars being infused into such technologies, it would (again) be foolish not to believe that a portion of USA automotive market will be affected by these hybrids and if they don’t continue to research and jump on board, they will lose major footing for the future. I believe we are on a clear trail of getting away from gasoline and replacing it with an alternative fuel. However, there has not been a fixed ‘golden bullet’ find by the automotive industry. Thus, slow steps in research and marketing. But we are starting to see these roll out and with my having three personal friends having purchased new hybrids. They are delighted and excited even a few months after owning it. I would certainly consider a hybrid if they were reasonably priced. When I am due to trade my truck in for a new vehicle in about 2.5 years, I will take a few hybrids for test drives. I will be open-minded. So, no matter what, it is affecting sales, and it is getting attention.

Adjusting & Aligning the Headlights

Not having a vehicle’s headlights properly aligned can create a nuisance to other road users and in other situations can even get the driver in trouble with the law. While aligning a vehicle’s headlights is a DIY project that most persons can easily undertake, to get a more precise alignment, consider taking the vehicle to a shop that has specialized alignment equipment. However, we will explain how to align headlights as a DIY project.

How to Align Headlights Yourself

A headlight may have vertical misalignment, horizontal misalignment or both. Vertical misalignments are easier to deal with because most cars come with adjustments to easily fix the problem, while horizontal misalignments sometimes require jostling with the lights mounting.

Before beginning, check that the car is level. Even though it is on level ground, incorrectly inflated tires or unevenly distributed weight, in the car, can cause the headlights to pitch too high or low. Park the vehicle facing a wall that’s exactly 25 feet away, both lights should be at the same distance from the wall.

  • Mark the center of the lights with tape in an X pattern.
  • Turn on the lights and make note if any light beams is pointed off center. Be careful not to leave the lights on during the entire alignment process, especial if the engine is off, as doing so can run down the batteries and make it difficult to restart the vehicle.
  • Open the bonnet and identify the light’s alignment adjustments. The owner’s manual can be used to locate them if they are proving difficult to find.
  • Use the screwdriver to adjust one light to the correct height slowly, and then align the other light with it. Use the level to do a more precise job of leveling both lights.
  • Also, ensure that the lights aren’t adjusted too high to the extent that they would be an annoyance to other drivers.

After the Lights have been Aligned

It will be necessary to do a test drive to ensure that a good job was done with the alignment. Check that the lights are projecting far enough ahead without being so high that they are blinding other road users, even while on low beam. Also, check the horizontal alignment to ensure that the lights aren’t too far to the left or right.

Resolving Issues Inside the Power Steering Pump

Just about every car produced since 1970 comes standard with power steering. It is one of those luxuries taken for granted until it is no longer available. Without the assistance power steering pumps provide, steering wheels less than 24 inches in diameter would not be possible. The additional leverage of a larger steering wheel is necessary on older, classic, cars without this modern-day comfort.

Symptoms of a Failing Pump

One of the first signs of a problem with the power steering is not the steering at all. It is the noises emanating from under the hood when the wheel is cranked to the left or right. More prominent when the car is on a slow roll or stopped in a parking lot, a squeal heard when the steering wheel is turning, indicates a power steering pump problem. A few conditions to check first include:

  • Power steering fluid level; make sure the fluid reservoir is full of the correct fluid, and not overfilled.
  • Check the color of the fluid; if the fluid is black and full of trash or metal shavings, the pump has either failed or is in the process of it.
  • Inspect the condition of the serpentine belt; a slipping belt will create the same sound, and sometimes under the same conditions.

If the fluid is low, look for leaks in the hose or the power steering fluid reservoir. Power steering fluid does not get “used up” necessarily; if the level is low, it is likely leaking.

Hoses are the most common culprit if suspecting a fluid leak. Make sure the hose end fittings are tight, and no fluid is accumulating around them. This will be a sign a small leak at the hose end fitting is present.

If when inspecting the belt, it appears shiny or cracked on the inside surface, it is time to replace the belt. A serpentine belt was slipping on the power steering pump’s pulley, will not allow adequate pressure to the steering box. This slipping can result in steering difficulty and excess noise.

Removing the Power Steering Pump

When the belt and fluid level appear to be in order, the fluid’s condition can indicate the pumps state. Metallic shavings in the fluid, or burning smell, are indications the pump is out. Although the steps involved in removing the pump are straightforward, depending on the type of vehicle, the job can be quite difficult.

Most pumps mount near the top of the engine compartment. Some, however, mount underneath the engine, against the firewall. Follow these steps to remove the pump:

  • Drain the power steering fluid into a container by removing the hoses from the pump.
  • Remove the serpentine belt and set aside for installation later. This is a terrific opportunity to inspect the belt and replace it if necessary.
  • Remove the bolts anchoring the pump to its mount. With little exception, this is easier said than done. Some other engine components may require removal to get the power steering pump out.

With the pump removed, two options are available for swapping the pulley out from the old pump to the new one. Use of a pulley removal tool, or depending on the parts shop where the new pump is purchased, ask the shop to swap out the pulley when they exchange the pump.

Power Steering Pump Installation

Installing the new or remanufactured pump in the opposite order of steps as it was removed, will usually get the job done. Some of the more significant steps to follow during installation are to double-check the alignment of the pump’s pulley with the other pulleys that the serpentine belt will ride on. Secondly, if boss-type fittings are used on the connections, make sure to use new o-rings to seal the system from leaks adequately.

Power Steering Pump Set-up

Once the pump is connected and all hooked up, load the reservoir with the manufacturer-approved power steering fluid. There was a time when oil was oil, and any old power steering fluid would work as well as the next, those times are no more. Advances in both fluids and pumps often dictate the use of specifically formulated fluids. Make sure to use the right one.

Bleed the air from the system once the reservoir is filled with fluid. Air in the system will cause excessive noise and erratic steering conditions if left without removing it. With the cap off the reservoir, turn the steering wheel to the stops in each direction 4 or 5 times. This will burp any entrapped air from the system. Re-check the fluid level, and seal the cap on tight.

Replacing the power steering pump is not one of the easiest jobs for the do-it-yourself mechanic, but it is certainly not impossible. The money saved, not to mention the extra care and effort put into doing the job right, will more than pay for the time spent making the repair.

Ethanol-Blended Gasoline May Do More Harm Than Good

The statement that ethanol-blended gasoline helps fuel economy is horrifically incorrect. With hopes to open peoples’ eyes to this myth, ethanol-blended fuels could be the answer to fuel economy, greener transportation or eco-friendly production. Unfortunately, it has fallen far shorter than many hoped in all of these areas. There are two distinctly different types of ethanol-blended fuels. Because the word gasoline is used in the question, I assume it is querying about conventional modern unleaded fuel which does now contain trace amounts of ethanol. E85, of which I have gained a considerable amount of knowledge during the last two months, and regular gasoline mixed with trace amounts of ethanol, something I have researched thoroughly for a few weeks now.

E85 might not be good for your old carsGas Companies Make More Money

Unleaded gasoline now contains a small amount of ethanol, roughly 10%. This 10% is added for the sole purpose of widening the profit margin of the sale. Do NOT let them fool you. Ethanol is cheaper to produce than gasoline, and by mixing this ethanol into standard unleaded, and selling you their “gasoline,” they make even more money. The truth if you are running a conventional vehicle, is that this ethanol is indeed hurting your engine and robbing you of mileage. Because the ethanol burns quicker in the mixture than the remaining gasoline, they essentially sold you about 95% of a tank of expensive fuel for the price of a full tank.

In the meantime the ethanol, because it is corrosive, is damaging the interior parts of your engine. If left in your car for prolonged periods of time, the fuel tank and carburetor will be compromised. Because gasoline is constantly present in your vehicle — whether the same batch or not, parts are always exposed to the caustic effects of ethanol. These problems with conventional engines have arisen from the recent addition of ethanol in standard gasoline; however, in a non-conventional E85-ready vehicle which can use either fuel safely, this is the better, more efficient fuel.

Octane Rating

Ethanol’s octane rating of 110 drops to about 103 when mixed to create E85. By itself, ethanol’s octane rating is noticeably higher than unleaded’s rating of 87. The truth is, the lower the octane, the slower burning the fuel. Therefore, regular gasoline is the most efficient in cost and performance. Likewise, this should help dispel the myth of premium gasoline yielding better mileage. If your vehicle can run regular gasoline, it should. There is no need to use premium gasoline, unless your vehicle states it, or if it is being used in a small engine such as a lawnmower, or weed-whacker.

Because of the new “unleaded,” smaller engines fail quickly when put in storage. In these events, do NOT siphon but use premium gasoline and a fuel stabilizer. It will help, but nothing can prevent the inevitable.) Like modern ethanol-blended unleaded fuel, which contains 10% ethanol and 90% standard gasoline, E85 is almost the exact opposite with 85% ethanol and 15% unleaded. When comparing the two front-running fuels, the price is almost equal per mile. E85 is indeed cheaper, but a tank of unleaded will travel farther than a tank of E85 evening out the price advantage E85 may have over traditional gasoline. Most E85-ready vehicles benefit on unleaded with a five mpg advantage over E85. Also, with a stronger engine capable of withstanding the corrosive behavior of ethanol, an FFV’s (Flex-fuel vehicle) engine will last much longer on gasoline. The only trick is that once an FFV owner chooses a fuel, they must stay with it or vital engine parts will fail. The claim that you can switch between E85 and unleaded at your discretion is a lie. If components (fuel injectors for example) get used to one fuel over another, it will unsuccessfully operate and fail altogether on the other.

On Extended Warranty

Plus, you will not get the full mileage potential of your vehicle, unless it is broken in on a particular fuel. Ethanol fuel in itself is not worth it. When you examine all the characteristics of it, there is no advantage in price, mileage or value. The only positive that ethanol has brought about is the FFV. Not because it allows a person to use E85 fuel with the same wear and tear as a conventional vehicle on gasoline, but because it allows for huge maintenance opportunities, if it’s enhanced components are taken advantage of. An FFV vehicle capable of receiving the everyday torture that E85 dishes out could easily outlast a typical conventional vehicle by leaps and bounds if given traditional gasoline instead. Essentially, buying an E85-ready vehicle is like buying a more extended warranty for your car’s engine.

Gasoline and ethanol when compared side by side are relatively identical when used in an E85-ready vehicle. When used in a conventional engine, even small traces of ethanol can cause major component damage. In conclusion, when ethanol is mixed into traditional gasoline, it reduces the value of that fuel causing lower mileage, increased emissions (because of the way ethanol is produced and burned) and an even higher profit margin for one of the most lucrative industries in the world.

When I hear the words “muscle car” in a conversation, my eyebrows go up, and my ears become more open. It seems to be a favorite topic with almost anyone that understands and respects automobiles.

Muscle cars through the years have been known to turn heads and to shake the ground with there sizeable cubic inch V-8 engines and their loud, free-flowing exhaust system. To me, muscle cars are not just from the 60’s and 70’s but are still alive today. With today’s advanced technologies in auto designs, automakers are making stronger, more fuel-efficient engines and cars that produce just as much power as they did in the 60’s and 70’s, but with a less cubic inch.

But we are at a time now that gas is outrageous and American manufacturers have to compensate for that and produce smaller engines and battery-powered automobiles to compete with the overseas automakers. American muscle is still alive I believe. It just has adapted to society and demands.
